Whilst consideration of strategies to support all teachers is beyond the scope of this book, below we make some practical suggestions for trainee and early career teachers to sustain their engagement in teaching.

Professional life phase 0–3 years: Commitment – Support and challenge

The phrase ‘just about managing’ could easily be deployed for many teachers in their training and early career phase as teachers. But so many trainees and new teachers are so different that it would not be right to label all teachers as the same and therefore needing similar approaches to sustain their motivation. Day et al.’s (2006) analysis of a sense of efficacy is interesting here. It suggests that trainee and newly qualified teachers need positive feedback to reinforce their professional self-concept in terms of their effectiveness. However, it is essential that the work of crafting a teacher’s identity with strong values must carry on through their early career. Whilst a teacher must adapt to their school, the school must also adapt to the teacher. Opportunities to reinforce and refine their identity as a teacher are critical to maintaining motivation and engagement.
